Fairies are known to live far longer than mortals, and it is only once in a hundred years a baby is born among them. Therefore, in fairyland, there is no treasure as precious as a child.
There is an old myth that fairies sometimes steal human babies and leave in their place "changelings." Of course this is a very foolish thing to think because Fairies cherish all babies far too much to ever play such tricks, although they have been known to sneak into nurseries to tickle baby feet or whisper funny stories in their ears. This is why babies are sometimes heard kicking and giggling even when they appear to be all by themselves.
